CHURCH VISITS IN THE MARRICKVILLE AREA
Friends of Bethlehem members visited five churches in the Marrickville Council area in the month before Christmas. Councillor Cathy Peters, Stewart Mills, Marty Morrison, Maggie Huang, former MLC Sylvia Hale, Peter Manning, Carole Lawson, Peter Jennings, Melanie Morrison and Councillor Mary O’Sullivan all represented Friends of Bethlehem and looked after the stalls at the various churches.
We spoke at the churches at Christmas time to highlight the great oppression Bethlehem faces at this time. Tourism is dramatically reduced because of the Israeli Apartheid wall, the military checkpoints and Israeli settler attacks on its residents. As a result, Bethlehem is on its knees. In response, Friends of Bethlehem sold many precious hand-made goods bought directly from Bethlehem crafts people (especially women).
The response from Marrickville church-goers was amazing. We thank them for their generosity and heart-felt support. More than a $1,000 of Palestinian goods from Bethlehem were sold in a month.
In addition, many parishioners bought packs of our new Friends of Bethlehem Christmas cards (see on our website) and these too have been a great success.
The churches visited were:
- Marrickville Uniting Church, Cnr Illawarra and Warren Rds (18 Dec)
- Salvation Army Church, Dulwich Hill; St Luke’s Anglican Church, Enmore (11 Dec)
- Holy Trinity C of E, Dulwich Hill (4 Dec)
- St. Brigid’s, Marrickville (26/27 Nov).
Thanks goes to the ministers, priests and Sallies majors who invited us into their congregations.
In the meantime, remember to keep Bethlehem on your travel itinerary for 2012! We’ll be adding a new “how to travel” page on our website soon!
